In 1865, Atkinson Morley, a wealthy hotel-owner and governor of St. George's Hospital, left £150,000 in his will for the provision of a convalescent hospital. Using the money, land next to Copse Hill in Wimbledon was purchased, and the hospital was completed and opened in 1869.
During WW2, a neurosurgery unit was established, and the hospital remained open until October 2003, when services were transferred to a newly built hospital nearby.
At present (April 2007), a private developer (Laguna Quays Ltd.) now owns the site, and has submitted a planning application to the local council. If approved, it will result in the building being converted into a private hospital specialising in fertility, paediatrics and maternity services.
