Normally this world-famous landmark would be closed to the public, but during October and early November 2006, Battersea opened to the public as the home of a modern art exhibition.

The power station was built in 2 stages. Battersea A was completed in 1939, and stood for 14 years as a long building with 2 chimneys; one at each end. Several years later, a plan was devised to enlarge Battersea and increase its generating power, and by 1953, the second generator hall (Battersea B) was built alongside the original one, creating the 4-chimney building we all know today.

In 1975, Battersea A was shut down, followed by Battersea B 1983. A regeneration project began, but work was stopped in 1989 due to escalating costs, and the building was left in a semi-derelict state.

At present, a new regeneration project is taking place, utilising the current building as well as some entirely new buildings, to create new hotels, apartments, offices, galleries, a new theatre and car parking.

The decay is obvious when inside the building. This is the northern interior wall, complete with smashed windows and dirty, cracked brickwork.
