Eastry hospital started off life as a workouse, built in 1782 for the poor, elderly and infirm. A new workhouse was built during 1835/36, and an infirmary and fever ward added in 1871.
With the dawn of the NHS, the site was turned into a large hospital for the mentally impaired, before closing in March 1997. A small group of NHS buildings are still in use on a nearby, but seperate, site. The original complex is now awaiting redevelopment.

Inside one of the many buildings, at the top of the stairs leading to the 2nd floor. This area of the hospital is particularly derelict, with the walls being held up by metal supports, and the floorboards threathing to collapse with every step you take! |

The view down the staircase to the 1st floor. Large amounts of plaster and peeling paint now cover the steps, falling away from the walls after years without any kind of maintainance. |

The final photo before leaving this area of the hospital. Much of the original equipment was left here when the NHS moved out, such as this hoist system for lifting infirm patients in and out of bed. |
